Washington: Space enthusiasts and the general public around the world are being given a unique opportunity to have their names travel aboard NASA’s Artemis II mission, which is scheduled to circle the Moon and return to Earth in 2026. Under the “Send Your Name with Artemis II” initiative, participants can submit their names online to be included on an SD card that will fly inside the Orion spacecraft during its historic journey.

The campaign, which is free and open to everyone regardless of nationality or age, requires interested participants to register by January 21, 2026, after which submissions will be compiled and saved digitally for the flight. Once registered, individuals receive a personalised digital boarding pass as a keepsake, and they are encouraged to include names of family members even pets as part of their submission.

Artemis II will be the first crewed lunar mission in the Artemis programme, carrying four astronauts NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen on a roughly 10-day trip around the Moon and back. Although the mission will not land on the lunar surface, it will test critical spacecraft systems and lay the groundwork for future lunar exploration under NASA’s long-term plans.

NASA officials say the public engagement effort is designed to spark global interest in space exploration and connect people to the growing Artemis programme, which aims to establish a sustainable human presence on the Moon and eventually send astronauts to Mars. The SD card carrying submitted names will remain aboard the Orion capsule throughout the mission’s lunar flyby and return to Earth.
