Nestlé Recalls Baby Formula Batches Globally Over Toxin Risk

Nestlé has launched a voluntary global recall of several infant formula products due to concerns regarding contamination with cereulide, a toxin that can cause food poisoning. The recall affects several of the company's major brands, including SMA in the UK, Guigoz and Nidal in France, and Beba and Alfamino in Germany and Austria. According to Nestlé, the issue originated from an ingredient provided by a third-party supplier. While no illnesses have been confirmed to date, the company is pulling specific batches from shelves "out of an abundance of caution" to prioritize infant safety.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has warned that the cereulide toxin, produced by Bacillus cereus bacteria, can trigger rapid symptoms such as vomiting and stomach cramps. Critically, the agency noted that the toxin is heat-stable and is unlikely to be destroyed by boiling water during formula preparation. Parents and caregivers are urged to check batch numbers on the base of formula tins or packaging against the official lists provided on Nestlé’s website or local food safety portals. Nestlé has apologized for the inconvenience and is offering full refunds for all affected products.
