A 20-year-old Indian doctoral student, Shivank Avasthi, was shot dead on Tuesday afternoon near the University of Toronto’s Scarborough Campus, marking the city’s 41st homicide of the year. Police responded to reports of "unknown trouble" in the Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road area at approximately 3:34 pm, where they discovered Avasthi with a fatal gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect or suspects responsible for the shooting fled the area before officers arrived and remain at large, prompting authorities to seek the public's help in identifying and locating the accused.
The Consulate General of India in Toronto has expressed "deep anguish" over the student's tragic death and is currently assisting the bereaved family while coordinating closely with local law enforcement. This fatal incident has heightened safety concerns within the community, as it follows the recent murder of another Indian national, 30-year-old Himanshi Khurana, in Toronto just last week. Toronto Police are urging anyone with information, dashcam footage, or witness accounts from the Highland Creek Trail area to contact homicide investigators or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
