France Approves New Aircraft Carrier to Replace Charles de Gaulle
French President Emmanuel Macron has officially approved plans to build a new aircraft carrier to replace France’s current flagship, the Charles de Gaulle.
Speaking on Sunday during a visit to French troops in the United Arab Emirates, Macron said the decision follows the country’s latest military planning laws and a detailed review of France’s defence needs.
“I have decided to equip France with a new aircraft carrier,” he said, adding that the final approval for the project was given this week.
The new vessel will ensure that France maintains its aircraft carrier capability as the Charles de Gaulle approaches the later years of its service life.
