Trump Sues BBC for $10 Billion Over Edited January 6 Speech

Washington: US President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against the BBC, seeking $10 billion in damages for defamation and unfair trade practices. The lawsuit alleges that the BBC intentionally misrepresented Trump's January 6, 2021, speech by splicing together separate parts to create a false narrative.

The BBC had broadcast a documentary which included the edited speech, just days before the 2024 US presidential election. Trump claims the edit made it appear he urged supporters to storm the Capitol, damaging his reputation.

The lawsuit, filed in a Florida court, argues that the BBC's actions were a ‘brazen attempt to interfere in and influence’ the election. Trump is seeking $5 billion in damages for defamation and $5 billion for unfair trade practices.

The BBC has apologised for the edit, acknowledging it was an ‘error of judgment,’ but maintains there's no legal basis for the lawsuit. The controversy led to the resignations of the BBC's top executive and head of news.
