Netanyahu Seeks Pardon As Corruption Trial Continues
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has officially requested a pardon from President Isaac Herzog in relation to his ongoing corruption case. He claims that the trial is hindering his ability to perform his duties. This important announcement was made in a video address shared on the social media platform X, following public support for his pardon from US President Donald Trump.
“Today, my lawyers submitted a request for clemency to the President of the State,” Netanyahu stated in the video posted on X on Sunday.
As Israel’s longest-serving prime minister and the first sitting leader to testify as a criminal defendant, Netanyahu has consistently denied the charges against him, referring to the five-year legal process as a “witch hunt.” A decision in the ongoing trial is not expected until at least 2026, and Netanyahu has the right to appeal any ruling to the Supreme Court.
He faces serious charges in three distinct cases, including fraud, breach of trust, and bribery. Prosecutors allege that he exchanged regulatory favors with media owners in Israel for favorable coverage. Additionally, he is accused of accepting gifts worth hundreds of thousands of shekels from Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan and Australian businessman James Packer, all while promoting their personal interests.
