Unidentified drones were spotted over multiple Danish military sites, including the country’s largest base, on Friday night, in what officials described as part of a “hybrid attack” with potential links to Russia.
Danish military authorities confirmed that drones were observed at “several military sites,” though they declined to provide further details.
Police reported that “one to two drones” were seen around 8:15 p.m. local time near the Karup military base, which houses all of Denmark’s armed forces helicopters, its airspace surveillance units, flight school, and various support functions. Parts of the national defence command are also based at Karup, according to the military’s website.
Police spokesman Simon Skelkjaer said authorities could not determine the drones’ origin and added, “We didn’t take them down.” He confirmed that police are working closely with the military in the ongoing investigation.
The Karup base shares runways with the Midtjylland civilian airport, which was briefly closed during the incident. No flights were affected as no scheduled departures or arrivals were planned at that time, Skelkjaer said.
This incident follows a series of unexplained drone sightings across Denmark since Monday, which have led to temporary closures of several airports. Similar events earlier this week disrupted operations at Oslo Airport in Norway. These developments coincide with recent drone incursions in Poland and Romania, as well as Russian fighter jets violating Estonian airspace, heightening security concerns amid Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
