German investigators searched the offices of far-right lawmaker Maximilian Krah on Thursday after parliament lifted his immunity amid allegations of bribery linked to Chinese sources.
Krah, 48, a member of the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, dismissed the accusations of money laundering and bribery as “absurd, fabricated, and purely politically motivated.” He described the raid on his offices as “an attempt at intimidation” in a post on X.
Krah, a former Member of the European Parliament (MEP), has served in the Bundestag since the German general elections in February.
The investigation follows the arrest of Jian Guo, a former aide to Krah in the European Parliament, in Brussels in April 2024 on suspicion of spying for China. Prosecutors claim Guo, a German national, had worked for Chinese intelligence since 2002, including during his tenure in Krah’s Brussels office. Krah has denied any knowledge of his aide’s alleged espionage.
The Dresden Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed it is investigating Krah on charges of accepting bribes as a European Parliament representative and laundering money connected to payments from China.
