Nepal’s President Ramchandra Paudel announced Thursday that he is working to end the political crisis that erupted after violent protests this week forced Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign and left parliament in flames.
“I am consulting and making every effort to find a way out of the current difficult situation in the country within the constitutional framework,” President Paudel said in a statement. He appealed to all political parties to remain confident that a solution would be reached soon to address the demands of protesting citizens.
Oli, 73, who has served four terms as prime minister, resigned Tuesday amid nationwide unrest. His current whereabouts are unknown. Constitutionally, 80-year-old Paudel is expected to invite the leader of the largest parliamentary party to form a new government.
Meanwhile, Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel met with key political figures and representatives of the youth-led protest movement on Wednesday, according to a military spokesperson. A curfew has been imposed across the Himalayan nation of 30 million, following the worst violence the country has seen in two decades.
President Paudel urged citizens to “practice restraint and cooperate to maintain peace and order in the country.”
