A Russian airstrike on Tuesday killed at least 20 people in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced in a social media post. The attack is among the deadliest in recent weeks, as peace efforts remain stalled.
According to Zelensky, the strike hit the rural settlement of Yarova with an aerial bomb, targeting civilians at the very moment pensions were being distributed. “Ordinary people were directly attacked. More than 20 people were killed,” he said.
The governor of Donetsk later confirmed 21 people had died and the same number were wounded.
Zelensky shared video footage from the scene showing bodies on the ground, a burned-out van near a playground, and scattered personal belongings. The images could not be independently verified.
Yarova, located about eight kilometers from the front line, had a pre-war population of around 1,900 residents.
The Ukrainian president urged international partners to react strongly. “A response is needed from the United States. A response is needed from Europe. A response is needed from the G20,” Zelensky stressed.
Moscow claims the Donetsk region as part of Russia, despite not having full control. Kyiv says Russia has positioned around 100,000 troops in the area, raising fears of a new offensive.
