A rescue boat carrying flood victims overturned in eastern Pakistan, killing a 70-year-old woman and four children, authorities said Sunday.
The incident occurred late Saturday when the boat, part of the Rescue 1122 service, struck an underwater object, according to Irfan Ali Kathia, director general of the provincial disaster management authority. "Ten other people were rescued, but unfortunately five lost their lives," he told local media.
Heavy monsoon rains over the past week have swollen three major rivers in Punjab province, Pakistan’s agricultural hub and home to nearly half of the country’s 255 million people. The flooding has mainly affected rural areas, but urban centers, including parts of Lahore, have also been impacted.
While the seasonal monsoon is crucial for farmers, climate change is making it increasingly unpredictable and dangerous. Nationwide, landslides and floods caused by unusually heavy rains have killed more than 850 people since June.
