New York City was shaken on Monday when a man armed with a rifle opened fire inside a busy Manhattan office tower, killing four people — including an off-duty NYPD officer — and wounding a fifth before taking his own life, authorities confirmed.
The gunman, identified as 42-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, had a documented history of mental health issues, police said. His motive for targeting 345 Park Avenue, a building that houses offices for companies like the NFL, KPMG, and Blackstone, remains unclear.
Mayor Eric Adams described the scene as “horrific” and said one man is still fighting for his life in critical condition, while four others suffered minor injuries as they scrambled to escape.
According to Police Commissioner Edward Caban, surveillance footage captured Tamura pulling up in a double-parked BMW, stepping out with an M4-style rifle, and immediately opening fire. He first shot the off-duty officer at the building’s entrance, then a woman who tried to hide. The gunman continued firing through the lobby, hitting a security guard and another man.
Tamura then took the elevator to the 33rd floor, where he entered a real estate management office, fatally shot another victim, and then turned the gun on himself.
“We are still piecing together why this location was targeted,” Commissioner Caban said.
The tragic shooting has left employees, tenants, and the city in shock, as investigators continue to search for answers behind the rampage.
