At least 54 people have lost their lives and over 220 others have been injured across Pakistan in the past 24 hours due to heavy monsoon rains, the country’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed on Thursday.

A spokesperson for the NDMA told AFP that the death toll was recorded at 8:00am (0300 GMT) and that the province of Punjab had reported the highest number of fatalities.

“Fifty-four people were killed and 227 injured across the country,” the spokesperson said, highlighting the severe impact of the ongoing monsoon season.

Rescue teams and local authorities are continuing relief operations as forecasts warn of more rainfall in the coming days. The NDMA has urged residents in affected areas to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines.

Pakistan regularly experiences deadly floods and rain-related incidents during the monsoon season, which typically runs from July to September.
