Bangladesh’s interim government, which assumed control following a mass uprising last year, issued a strong call for national unity on Saturday, warning that the absence of collective resolve could open the door to the return of authoritarian rule.

Call for Stability Amid Rising Tensions
“Broader unity is essential to maintain national stability, organise free and fair elections, ensure justice and reform, and permanently prevent the return of authoritarianism in the country,” the interim administration said in an official statement.

The appeal comes after a week of heightened political tension, with rival political factions staging protests across the capital, Dhaka. The demonstrations have sparked concerns over escalating unrest in the lead-up to potential elections.

Political Uncertainty Since Hasina’s Ouster
Bangladesh, a South Asian nation of approximately 170 million people, has been in a state of political flux since the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. The dramatic power shift followed widespread student-led protests demanding democratic reforms and an end to long-standing political repression.

The interim government, installed to steer the country through a transitional phase, has since pledged to uphold democratic principles and restore institutional integrity.

As the political climate remains volatile, the government’s latest message signals both a warning and an invitation — urging all parties to come together in pursuit of a stable and democratic future.
