The United Kingdom and the European Union have reached a broad-ranging agreement covering food trade, fishing rights, defence collaboration, and travel protocols for British citizens.

The agreement, announced during a high-level summit in London attended by Prime Minister Keir Starmer and top EU leaders, is aimed at smoothing over key post-Brexit frictions and strengthening cooperation.

Key Highlights of the Agreement:

  • Food and Drink Trade Simplified: A new sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) agreement will ease checks and reduce bureaucracy on agricultural exports and imports. This is expected to benefit British producers, particularly small businesses, by making it easier to sell goods like sausages and dairy to EU markets.

  • Fishing Rights Secured: EU fishing vessels will retain access to UK waters until 2038 under a 12-year agreement, ensuring continuity for coastal economies on both sides.

  • Passport Control Eased: British travellers will gain expanded access to EU eGates, reducing wait times at borders. Additionally, the reintroduction of simplified "pet passports" will ease travel with animals across the Channel.

  • Defence Partnership Established: The UK defence sector will now be eligible to participate in the EU's proposed €150 billion “Security Action for Europe” fund. The move is expected to support job creation and enhance cross-border security collaboration.

  • Youth Mobility Discussions Underway: Talks are progressing on a youth mobility scheme, potentially allowing young people to live, work, or travel more freely between the UK and EU, under a capped and time-limited framework.

The UK government estimates that the new measures could add up to £9 billion to the nation’s GDP by 2040—though experts note this would only offset a small fraction of the economic cost of Brexit.

While not a return to the single market or customs union, officials on both sides hailed the agreement as a breakthrough in rebuilding practical and strategic ties in the face of global uncertainty.
