Russia Rejects EU-U.S. Ceasefire Proposal, Hits Ukraine with Drone Wave
Ukrainian officials reported a large-scale drone assault by Russia overnight, marking the end of a brief 72-hour ceasefire that had taken effect last week.
According to Ukraine's air force, Moscow launched 108 Shahed attack drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles starting from 2:00 a.m. on May 11. Ukrainian forces claimed to have intercepted and downed 60 of them.
This wave of attacks followed a relative lull, with Kyiv having reported no drone strikes since Thursday when the Russian-declared truce began. However, Ukrainian authorities accused Russia of violating the ceasefire hundreds of times during that period. Moscow, in turn, alleged that Ukraine had also failed to observe the ceasefire agreement.
The renewed hostilities come amid heightened international calls for de-escalation. A 30-day ceasefire proposal backed by the European Union and the United States was dismissed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who instead offered to hold direct talks with Ukrainian officials later this month.
