A slow-moving tropical storm, Cyclone Alfred, has caused widespread disruption along Australia's eastern coast, leaving residents bracing for further heavy rain and wind. Although Alfred weakened to a tropical low on Saturday, it continues to present serious flooding risks, especially in southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales.

The storm brought down trees and power lines, leaving hundreds of thousands of homes without electricity. Authorities have urged caution as the region faces continued rainfall and flash flooding. Flood warnings remain in effect as the storm's effects persist throughout the coming days.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated, “The situation remains very serious due to flash flooding and heavy winds, with coastal impacts expected to continue.”

A search operation led to the discovery of a body believed to be that of a 61-year-old man who was swept into floodwaters near Dorrigo, NSW. Additionally, severe coastal erosion was reported, with the sea carving cliffs into the sand along the Gold Coast.

Despite Alfred weakening, it remains a significant weather event, particularly for local rivers in the Northern Rivers region of NSW, where further flooding is anticipated. The Australian Defence Force (ADF) and emergency services are on high alert, but a road accident late Saturday involving military personnel highlighted the challenges faced in response efforts.

Meanwhile, the Gold Coast experienced hazardous waves that surfers had initially enjoyed earlier in the week. Authorities have warned of the dangers of entering the water, issuing fines for risky behavior. Acting Gold Coast Mayor Donna Gates urged the public to heed safety warnings, stressing the high risk of dangerous conditions along the coast.

While the worst of Alfred's winds have passed, the focus now shifts to managing the ongoing flood risks and supporting recovery efforts. The storm serves as a reminder of the region's vulnerability to such events and the need for continued vigilance as the weather system moves inland.
