Bahrain Can Set The Pace at COP30
COP 30 is the 30th edition of the annual Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC). COP brings together nearly every country in the world to negotiate and make decisions on climate action. This includes reduction in carbon footprint, emissions, promote green finance and explore sustainable measures to mitigate climate change. This year COP 30 is taking place in Belém, Brazil from 10 to 21 November 2025 and also happens to be the first climate summit to be held in the Amazon. The key focus of the summit this year include strengthening national climate plans, increasing climate finance and advancing adaption efforts to limit global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius.
Bahrain as a part of the Mideast Gulf bloc of oil producers is attending the summit to discuss energy security amid green transitions enabled by sustainable climate actions such as quadrupling the number of mangroves and doubling the number of trees. As an island nation Bahrain can utilise the COP forum to highlight vulnerability to sea level rise amid extreme temperatures. Additionally, the need for international consensus and support can also be stressed by Bahrain to encourage climate change adaptation, especially in the areas of finance, green tech knowhow transfer and capacity building and training. These steps by Bahrain at the conference can help set the course for a meaningful global dialogue towards safeguarding the environment.
Bahrain has taken commendable steps over the years to protect not only its immediate environment, ecology and biodiversity but also set stringent conservation benchmarks for the same. The setting up of a national target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, with an interim goal of a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2035 are some credible examples which can be showcased on a global scale at COP30 to drive home the point that Bahrain is serious about walking the talk on climate action. Through numerous side events, workshops and seminars, Bahrain can not only exchange best practices but also learn about innovative solutions for climate issues. The COP30 is a ideal platform for Bahrain to highlight the concept of “just transition” that balances the need for emissions reduction with the importance of its energy export economy.
The COP 30 in Brazil is a great opportunity that can help Bahrain build its global environment conservation brand credentials.
