Speed Up – To Rise and Race Together

Yesterday, during a power lunch with the newly appointed German Ambassador, H.E. Henning Simon, and a few friends from the media fraternity, the conversation turned to Bahrain’s Formula 1 track. The Ambassador was eager to know more about it and mentioned that he had never visited a place quite like it before.

That came as no surprise. Whenever I travel abroad and meet someone new, the moment I mention Bahrain, the first thing they talk about is Formula 1. It’s then that you realise how this single racetrack — with its roaring engines and global spectacle — has branded Bahrain in the hearts of millions around the world.

Since hosting the iconic Formula 1 Grand Prix, Bahrain has truly emerged as a global hub for sports — a destination where passion meets purpose. Following F1’s success, Bahrain also established its own international brand, the BRAVE Combat Federation, which continues to attract sports enthusiasts from across the globe.

We live in a world where speed has become an essential ingredient for success. Today, it is not merely land, technology, or knowledge that defines achievement, but the speed with which one applies these resources. Formula 1 perfectly reflects this philosophy — it teaches us that precision, discipline, and timing drive true progress.

Sport, at its core, is more than competition. It is a universal language that unites people, connects nations, and bridges cultural divides. It promotes health, peace, and friendship, offering moments of inspiration that last a lifetime. Sadly, recent incidents in cricket have shown how arrogance and unsporting behaviour can sometimes overshadow this beauty. True greatness, however, lies not only in victory but in humility — in how athletes inspire others through their character as much as through their performance.

Bahrain’s decision to invest in Formula 1 was a bold and visionary step that transformed the Kingdom’s global image. The Bahrain International Circuit became more than a racetrack — it became a symbol of ambition, courage, and excellence. Millions have since discovered this beautiful island through F1, experiencing Bahrain’s renowned warmth, culture, and hospitality.

Equally wise was Mumtalakat’s investment in McLaren, which strengthened Bahrain’s reputation in global motorsports. It brought not only financial success but also inspired young Bahrainis to pursue careers in racing technology, engineering, and management — fields once thought beyond imagination.

Sport also gives us unforgettable moments of emotion and humanity. At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond tore his hamstring during the race. In pain but refusing to quit, he struggled toward the finish line — helped by his father, who ran from the stands to support him. Together they crossed the line, earning the respect and tears of more than 65,000 spectators who stood and applauded.

While celebrating McLaren’s victory in the Formula 1 World Constructors’ Championship for the second consecutive year at the Singapore Grand Prix, we are reminded of the true essence of sport — it is not just about winning, but about inspiring. Bahrain, through its vision, leadership, and hospitality, continues to show the world how sports can unite people, lift spirits, and define a nation’s pride.

Bahrain has set a clear path forward — and what we need to do now is simple: rise together and race together toward a better tomorrow, at roaring speed.
