Think Before You Tap — Is It Safe to Use Banking Apps on Public Wi-Fi?
Dubai Police have issued a public warning urging residents to avoid conducting online banking or other sensitive transactions using public Wi-Fi networks, highlighting the high risk of cyberattacks and data theft associated with unsecured connections.
In an awareness post shared on their official social media platforms, the police explained that open Wi-Fi hotspots — commonly found in malls, cafés, and airports — can be exploited by hackers to intercept personal data, install malware, or gain unauthorized access to mobile devices and laptops.
“Public Wi-Fi can be more dangerous than you think. From data theft to malware attacks, the risks are real,” the advisory read. “Always use secure or private networks when handling financial information.”
The UAE Cybersecurity Council has also reiterated similar guidance, emphasizing that individuals and companies should use mobile data or verified private connections when accessing online banking or other confidential services. Users were advised to confirm network authenticity before connecting and to avoid changing passwords or entering financial details over unsecured links.
Authorities warned that the misuse of public Wi-Fi can lead not only to personal privacy breaches but also to corporate data leaks, potentially exposing businesses to legal and financial repercussions if sensitive information is compromised.
Cybersecurity experts recommend adopting additional protection measures such as virtual private networks (VPNs), multi-factor authentication, and regular software updates to reduce the risk of cyber intrusions.
Dubai Police reaffirmed their commitment to public safety in the digital sphere, encouraging residents to remain alert and practice responsible online behavior to safeguard personal and financial information.
