Selena Gomez has shared that returning to music will be “very hard” after the success of her recent role in Emilia Perez, a musical crime film directed by Jacques Audiard. The 32-year-old actress, who has seen major success in both her acting and singing careers, revealed at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival that she plans to focus more on film and TV projects in the coming months.

In her interview, Gomez reflected on the impact of working in film: “I think film and art-making and being around such incredible, talented people that have done nothing but uplift me along the way. It’s going to be very hard for me to ever go back to music after this.”

Selena expressed that she hopes Emilia Perez will serve as a stepping stone in her acting career. “The director just really trusted me, and I was so grateful because I’ve gotten to show people that I am capable of doing more. I hope that this is just the beginning for me,” she said.

Although she’s enjoyed great success as both an actress and a singer, Selena recently acknowledged that she may be “a little too old for the pop-star life.” Speaking to Variety, she explained: “I definitely think my strong suit is probably acting. But one thing I’m proud of in music is being able to tell a story—my favorite songs are mostly ballads, and they’re very transparent and honest. But I think I might be a little too old for the pop-star life."

Despite stepping back from music for now, Selena emphasized that she’s excited about this new chapter in her career, calling it “just the beginning” and expressing her happiness in embracing this new era of her life.
