Roman River and Classical Wave became the latest winners yesterday in the prestigious Bahrain Turf Series at Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) in Sakhir. Roman River captured the Hawar Cup amongst a field of 15 imported runners in the series’ seventh race, while Classical Wave lifted the Anchorman Cup after beating 12 other international contenders in the eighth of the series’ 10 £50,000 handicaps.

In attendance at yesterday’s events was REHC High Committee chairman His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa along with other high-ranking officials. Roman River claimed the Hawar Cup after the tightest of finishes down the six-furlong straight.

The M and E Racing horse, trained by AM Smith and ridden by Edinson Rodriguez, finished just a nose’s length ahead of runner-up Dark Shadow, competing for Al Mohamediya Racing and Osama Hashim while ridden by Neil Callan. Graphite Storm came third for Al Hassanain Racing, Ali Jan and Cameron Noble.

The win earned a Bahrain Turf Series hat-trick for the trio of M and E Racing, AM Smith and Edinson Rodriguez. They had also previously won two other turf series races, both with their horse Happy Craf, including the Al Manama Cup in December and the Al Jasra Cup last month. Meanwhile, Classical Wave lifted the Anchorman Cup in a hotly contested, nine-furlong event.

The Victorious-owned, Hesham Al Haddad-trained contender was ridden by last year’s Bahrain International Trophy winner David Egan, who came away with his own hat-trick of wins in the Bahrain Turf Series. Egan had also previously saddled Deep Intrigue to first place for the Al Wasmiya Cup, and then also claimed the Riffa Cup with Tawaareq, both in January.

It was also the second win of the turf series for Victorious. Yesterday, Classical Wave finished ahead of Zagato, competing for Al Mohamediya Racing, Hesham Al Haddad and Neil Callan, while Brains came third for The Judges and Partner, Jamie Osborne, and jockey Saffie Osborne.

Classical Wave became the fifth horse trained by Hesham Al Haddad to win in the eight races of the turf series held to date. The others were Mars Landing, Deep Intrigue who won twice, and Tawaareq.
