School Mini Olympics: Joseph captures singles title

Geo Joseph secured the boys intermediate stage singles’ title in the table tennis championship as part of the 2015 School Mini Olympics. The Indian School student secured the competition’s gold medal after a comfortable 3-0 (11-4, 11-7, 11-2) win over school mate Sriram Rani in the final tie.

In the third-place match, Indian School’s Srikrishna Suveer and Avinash faced off in the bronze medal battle with Srikrishna winning 3-1 (11-7, 13-11, 8-11, 12-10) after a closely-contested affair.
The girls intermediate stage event was also an easy challenge for Amal Al Nuaimi of Al Hidd School as she clinched the gold medal with a 3-0 (11-2. 11-3. 11-3) win in the final against Um Salama’s Maram Hakam, with Zaynab Fathi of Sanabis School rounded off the podium after defeating her school rival Bushra Makki 3-0 (11-5, 13-11, 11-9) in the third-place tie.
Elsewhere, the finals of the swimming events took place at Khalifa Sports City Stadium’s Bahrain Swimming Association pool, where a variety of contests took place.
Promising swimmer Omar Abdulla of Al Imam Al Tabari School stole the limelight by coming on top in four of the six events held yesterday.
He took the gold medal in the 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly.
In the intermediate stage, Abdulaziz Daraj of Hamad Town School was dominant in all races, taking home the 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m and 200m freestyle gold medals.
The concluding contest of the swimming event saw the Indian School (4:33.63) top the 4x50m race, finishing ahead of runners-up Jaber bin Hayan (5:07.09) in the primary stage. East Riffa School (2:32.36) emerged intermediate stage champions, beating the silver medalists British School (2:33.55) and bronze medal winners Isa Town School (2:38.92).
Meanwhile, the curtains close on the 2015 Mini Olympics today with the awarding ceremonies in football, basketball, volleyball, swimming, table tennis and athletics scheduled to take place from 10am onwards at Khalifa Sports City in Isa Town.
It will be held under the patronage of His Majesty the King’s representative for charity work and youth affairs, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
