Concerns over the rising cost of attending the 2026 World Cup continue to surround the tournament, but Germany’s players have stepped in with an incredible show of support for travelling fans.
Captain Joshua Kimmich and several senior teammates have agreed to fund transport for around 600 supporters attending Germany’s final group match against Ecuador at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The initiative was organised in response to complaints about expensive and complicated travel between New York City and the stadium, with fans facing high bus and rail costs during the tournament period.
The German Football Association confirmed the arrangement, saying the players personally coordinated the effort to ease the financial burden on travelling supporters.
MetLife Stadium, one of the tournament’s key venues and host of several knockout matches, has been at the centre of wider concerns about accessibility. Supporters’ groups have argued that travel costs and logistical challenges could discourage attendance, particularly for matches requiring cross-state journeys between New York and New Jersey.
More broadly, the 2026 World Cup has faced scrutiny over affordability, with rising expenses for tickets, accommodation, and transport prompting fears that some fans may be priced out of following their teams.
While FIFA maintains that ticket demand remains strong, debates continue over whether the tournament will remain accessible to ordinary supporters once all associated costs are taken into account.
