Japanese Side Spoil Ronaldo’s Trophy Hopes
Brought in in 2022 to deliver major honors, Ronaldo was again left frustrated as Al Nassr fell short on the big stage despite a star-studded attack and long spells on the ball. The defeat adds to a growing sense of missed opportunities for the Saudi club, who continue to struggle in decisive moments despite heavy investment and elite talent.
Al Nassr started strongly in front of an expectant home crowd, controlling possession and pushing Gamba deep into their own half early on. The first major opening came in the 8th minute when Sadio Mané combined with Abdulrahman Ghareeb, but the effort was comfortably saved by Rui Araki.
Despite their control, Gamba Osaka struck against the run of play in the 30th minute with their first shot on target. Issam Jebali picked out Hummet, who turned sharply inside the box and finished low into the corner to stun the hosts.
After the break, Al Nassr increased their urgency and continued to commit numbers forward, but Gamba remained dangerous on the counter whenever space opened up.
Coach Jorge Jesus responded with changes, introducing Kingsley Coman and Salem Al Najdi in search of a breakthrough. João Félix later struck the post, Simakan missed a free header from a set piece, and Ronaldo was denied late on by a crucial block as frustration grew.
In the closing stages, Al Nassr poured forward but could not find a way through, with Gamba holding firm under sustained pressure to secure the title.
The result extends Ronaldo’s trophy drought and deepens Al Nassr’s recent run of near misses, including last week’s Saudi Pro League draw when they conceded late against title rivals Al Hilal. They now turn their attention to a crucial league fixture against Damac FC on Thursday, with the title still within reach.
