Bahrain made a confident entrance yesterday at the opening ceremony of the 6th Asian Beach Games in Sanya, China.

The Kingdom’s flag was carried high during the parade of nations at Yasha Park, as the delegation joined 44 other teams in a 75-minute seaside ceremony marking the official start of the event.

Chinese State Councilor Shen Yiqin declared the Games open, bringing attention to the return of the competition after a decade-long absence caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In total, around 10,000 participants are competing at the Games, including more than 1,600 athletes across 14 sports staged along Sanya’s coastline.

Bahrain is represented by four teams competing in beach handball, 3x3 basketball, beach wrestling, and open water swimming. The Kingdom is looking to build on its previous record of 11 medals, including seven golds, from past editions of the Games.

On the field, Bahrain’s campaign began on a high note, as the beach handball team secured a straight-sets win over hosts China in their opening group match.

That victory gives the team early momentum ahead of their remaining preliminary fixtures against the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Iran, and Hong Kong.

The Sanya edition marks the return of the Asian Beach Games after ten years, with China hosting the event for a second time following Haiyang 2012.
