Passion Meets Innovation – Ben Sulayem, First Non-American to Lead SEMA Show

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s lifelong passion for cars reached new heights this week as he made history in Las Vegas, becoming the first non-American ever to officially open the iconic SEMA Show — the world’s leading trade event for the automotive aftermarket.

The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show, the annual flagship event of FIA Member Club SEMA, draws over 160,000 industry professionals, innovators, and enthusiasts from more than 140 countries. The event celebrates performance, customization, and cutting-edge mobility technologies, serving as a global platform for manufacturers, buyers, and media to exchange ideas and celebrate the evolving culture of cars.

Attending in his dual capacity as President of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and a lifelong motoring enthusiast, Ben Sulayem engaged with U.S. lawmakers, representatives from major global OEMs, local government officials, and fellow racing drivers.

During the event, he spoke passionately about his deep-rooted love of cars, revealing that his personal favorite from his collection is a rare 1937 Studebaker Express.

Joined by SEMA CEO Mike Spagnola, Ben Sulayem also led key discussions on the FIA’s global influence as the governing body of motor sport and the federation representing mobility organizations worldwide.

Reflecting on the industry’s collective drive for innovation and progress, Ben Sulayem said:
“To be part of the automobile industry, you need passion. When I first attended SEMA in 2016, I was inspired by the energy, teamwork, and ability to tackle challenges together. That same spirit continues to define this community — one that values innovation, craftsmanship, and the freedom to create.”

He also underlined the enduring partnership between the FIA and SEMA, stating: “I am a part of SEMA, and they are a part of the FIA. We share the same commitment to advancing safety, sustainability, and responsible innovation across the automotive and mobility sectors.”

During his visit, the FIA reaffirmed its collaboration with SEMA on joint priorities such as improving vehicle safety standards, promoting sustainable technologies, and defending the global right to modify vehicles within responsible regulatory frameworks.

The strengthened partnership underscores both organizations’ shared commitment to ensuring that creativity, innovation, and car culture continue to thrive alongside safety, environmental responsibility, and the future of sustainable mobility.
