Mohamed Salah, Liverpool’s star forward, has admitted that talks with Saudi Pro League officials were “serious” before he penned a new deal with the Premier League champions. Speaking to On Sport Egyptian TV after being named the Football Writers’ Association men’s player of the year for a third time, the 33-year-old revealed how close he came to leaving Anfield.
Saudi Interest Was Real
Salah, who topped the Premier League scoring charts with 29 goals this season, described the Saudi offer as a “good opportunity.” “If I hadn’t renewed with Liverpool, it would have happened,” he told the Egyptian channel. The negotiations with Saudi officials were extensive, underpinned by a strong relationship with the league’s representatives. Yet, in the end, Salah chose to stay, signing a contract extension until 2027.
Fans Swayed the Decision
The long-running talks with Liverpool weren’t straightforward. Salah admitted last November he felt “more out than in,” but the Anfield faithful played a key role in his decision to stay. “Part of the pressure on the club came from the fans,” he said. “They wanted me to continue, and they played their role.” A compromise was reached, leaving both Salah and Liverpool content with the outcome.
Life After Klopp
Salah also opened up about working under new manager Arne Slot, contrasting his style with that of Jürgen Klopp, who led Liverpool to multiple titles, including this season’s Premier League. “Every coach has a different style, but I talk a lot with Slot, and we understand each other well,” Salah said. He appreciated Slot’s honesty and focus on getting the best from him, while praising Klopp’s immense contribution. “He gave too much to the club,” Salah added.
A Record-Breaking Star
Salah’s third FWA award puts him alongside Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, and his 29 goals were pivotal in securing Liverpool’s second Premier League title since his 2017 arrival. As he looks ahead, his commitment to the Reds ensures more chances to add to his legacy, with fans breathing a sigh of relief that their talisman isn’t heading to Saudi Arabia just yet.
