Deputy King lays foundation stone for Bahrain’s National Assembly building

His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Deputy King, laid the foundation stone yesterday for Bahrain’s National Assembly building, terming it a “significant milestone” in advancing democratic governance.

Placing the foundation stone, HRH said that Bahrain, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, will continue its progress towards more national achievements as part of the comprehensive development process and in a way that benefits the nation and citizens.

“The vision and aspirations of HM King always inspire the people of Bahrain to continue the work entrusted to them to build a better tomorrow. HRH also received a souvenir marking the beginning of the construction of the 19,000-square-meter National Assembly, which will follow green building standards and Bahraini heritage and is poised to create a unique landmark that signifies Bahrain’s democratic governance and traditional Bahraini culture.

The Deputy King said the moment - “a matter of pride” - also coincides with the commencement of the sixth legislative term of the Shura and Representative councils. The government, HRH said, is determined to continue achieving the development goals set by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, paying tribute to the contributions of late HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa in furthering national development.

“We are proud of the achievements of the Bahrain team members, whose positive impact is there in all aspects of Bahrain’s development, progress and growth. “This is a guiding force for Bahrain towards a more promising future and making it a role model at all levels. In this regard, HRH, the Deputy King, also reiterated the importance of strengthening ongoing cooperation and coordination between the Executive, Legislative and Judicial Authorities to advance the Kingdom’s developments.

The members of the Legislative Authority, HRH said, plays a significant role in framing legislation necessary for the Kingdom’s overall advancement.

19,000 square meters

In its first phase, the National Assembly building, which will have 19,000 square meters of area, will have a National Council Hall that can accommodate around 500 people, a 40-seat hall for Shura and representative council members and a multi-purpose hall.

The project also includes service buildings, a library and a museum documenting the history of democratic governance, a media centre, various service facilities and an outdoor yard surrounded by a gallery for the opening ceremonies of the sessions.

The building focuses on the optimal use of energy and follows green building standards and Bahraini architecture. The main gate to the council building will have a distinctive design featuring elements like palm fronds.
