Bahrain records fifth highest mean temperature for August in 120 years

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ Meteorological Directorate reported in their monthly weather summary that the month of August was warmer than normal in temperatures with below-average wind speed.

The mean temperature of the month was 36.3 C which is 1.2 C above the long-term normal for August and this goes on record as the fifth highest mean temperature for August since 1902.

The highest mean monthly temperature for August was 36.8 C recorded in 2021.

The mean maximum temperature of the month was 40.5 C which is 0.9 C below the long-term normal and this goes on record as the eighth highest mean maximum temperature for August since 1946.

The highest mean monthly maximum temperature for August was 41.8 C recorded in 2021.

During the month, Bahrain had 18 days with a maximum temperature exceeding 40 C.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 43.7 C which occurred on  August 15 at Bahrain International Airport (BIA).

The highest temperature recorded for August at Bahrain International Airport was 45.7 C which occurred on August 9 1993.

The highest temperature recorded in the month at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) was 46.1 C which was recorded on August 9 and 15 and at Durrat Al Bahrain was 44.6 C which was recorded on August 9.

The lowest temperature recorded was 31.7 C on August 1 and 30 at BIA but recorded 26.7 C on August 1 at Durrat Al Bahrain.

The mean relative humidity for August was 57% whereas the mean maximum relative humidity was 74% and the mean minimum relative humidity was 36%.

The maximum relative humidity was 88% recorded on August 12 and 13 and the minimum relative humidity was 11% recorded on August 27.

August was the seventh sunniest month for all Augusts since the sunshine records began in 1968.

The total hours of sunshine for the month were 355 hours. The highest monthly total hours of sunshine for August was 364.7 hours recorded in 2021.

Heavy rain showers associated with thunderstorms were reported at Durrat Al Bahrain on August 1 which produced daily total precipitation of 30.8 mm.

Trace amount of precipitation was recorded on August 10 at BIA.

This unsettled weather condition which occurred in August was due to the approach of tropical low-pressure formation lines on the southern regions of the Arabian Peninsula and the Arabian Sea that caused unstable weather and thundery showers accompanied by strong gust wind over some areas.

This weather phenomenon was almost similar to what happened in July.

The mean wind speed for August was 7 knots.

The prevailing wind was 37% from the East direction.

Gusty winds reached 31 knots on August 1 at BIA, but recorded 38 knots at Durrat Al Bahrain and 32 knots at King Fahad Causeway on the same day.

Northwesterly winds accounted for 11% of the observation.

Dust was reported on August 11. Visibility dropped to 2,000 meters at BIA.
