Notorious prisoner freed in arms case
Five defendants, including notorious prisoner Redha Al Ghasra were acquitted yesterday of possessing arms charges due to lack of evidence. The defendants were nabbed following a gun shooting in the area of Bani Jamra, which was reported by a police officer who was near the area to disperse rioters.
He said that he heard 15 shots from a pistol, and investigations concluded with the involvement of Al Ghasra in the incident that occurred on May 10, 2013. The latter, who is serving a combined total of over 100 years prison, was captured 14 days after the event. Police officers said that he encountered them with a pistol, causing injuries to a policeman. A witness earlier said that Al Ghasra was buying arms from a GCC state, and they were smuggled by his co-defendants.
They were allegedly dismantling the arms and stashing the pieces inside several cars in an attempt to evade the customs officers. The High Criminal Court said yesterday that it wasn’t reassured by the defendants’ statements before the Public Prosecution. “In additional to this, no arms have been confiscated from the defendants and sent to the forensic laboratory,” the court ruling read.
It’s worth to note that Al Ghasra has been convicted in several terror-related cases in the Kingdom.
