Top Bahraini health officials yesterday called on citizens and residents to get their COVID-19 booster jabs soon enough for ensuring their own and others safety, amid a warning by the World Health Organisation that the Omicron variant is spreading at an unprecedented rate.

Bahrain detected its first case of the new Omicron variant last week after testing a traveller, with the ministry also confirming the person as having no contacts inside Bahrain.

The Kingdom is also switching to yellow level on its COVID-19 alert system modelled on the traffic light system starting this Sunday until the 31st of January 2022.

The Yellow comes into play when the rolling average of positive cases in intensive care units is 51 to 100 for seven days.

The current decision is, however, a precautionary measure.

Authorities have confirmed that the new variant has not spread in Bahrain.

However, to remain safe, the CEO of Primary Health Care Centres, Dr Jalila Al-Sayed Jawad, said it is necessary to take the booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

“This is necessary to support the national efforts to preserve the health and safety of all.”

“All those eligible to receive the vaccine should go directly to health centres to take their booster jabs, without waiting for appointments,” the Dr said, adding that the vaccines are effective in raising immunity and alleviating symptoms and complications after infection.

Dr Al-Sayed urged parents to take the initiative to vaccinate their children to achieve societal immunity. The doctor praised the efforts of the national medical team to address the Coronavirus (Covid 19), pointing out the importance of unifying efforts and intensifying work by everyone.

Echoing her recommendations, Dr Mona Al Mahri, Family Medicine Consultant and Head of Maternity Health Services and childhood in primary health care stressed the importance of adhering strictly to all preventive measures to check the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Dr Al-Mahri called on parents to get anti-viral vaccination for their children between 3 to 11 years and 12 to 17 years.

The doctor reiterated the importance of wearing masks, washing hands, and applying social distancing standards to preserve everyone’s health, especially in light of the new mutation.

Dr Al-Mahri also highlighted the efforts by medical, nursing and health cadres and the importance of social responsibility to overcome this pandemic.

“This requires everyone to abide strictly to the decisions and instructions issued by the national medical team and the concerned authorities,” Dr AlMahri said.
