MP to submit proposal to snuff out child porn browsing

MP Mohammed Al Maarifi said that he would submit a law proposal before the Parliament next month to criminalise pornography, especially those exposing children, browsing in Bahrain. |
“This will also include those who share sleaze contents on their social media accounts and online forums and blogs,” Al Maarifi informed yesterday.
According to him, the proposal will stipulate co-ordination between several authorities in this regard, including Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Ministry, Information Affairs Ministry, Interior Ministry and the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA).
He explained, “I would like to suggest in the proposal that a new authority should be formed. The afore mentioned authorities to be included in it to defy this insidious threat.”
When quizzed about the suggested punishments in the proposal, he said, “It’s for the judicial authority to set the appropriate punishments, depending on the gravity of the crime.”
According to online reports, Bahrain doesn’t have specific laws to criminalise browsing pornography or underage porn.
Browsing, circulating or possessing child pornography is a crime in most of the advanced countries in the world, including the United States, United Kingdom, Japan and lately Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Meanwhile, Al Maarifi revealed that a previous proposal he submitted to the council, regarding taking pictures of road accidents and circulating them, is in the final stages of approval.
