Bahrain athletes win three gold medals in Military World Games

Bahrain won three gold medals and one bronze medal yesterday in the seventh CISM Military World Games in Wuhan, China. The gold-medalists included Salwa Eid Naser in the Women’s 400 metres, Winfred Yavi in the Women’s 3,000m Steeplechase, and Abbas Abubakar in the Men’s 400m.

The bronze medal was won by Isah Musa after finishing behind Abubakar. The Military World Games is a multisport event  for  military sportspeople, organised by the International Military Sports Council (CISM). This year in Wuhan, more than 9,000 athletes are taking part, contesting 329 events in 27 sports. The Games kicked off on October 18 but yesterday was the first day of Track and Field events. Salwa won her final with a time of 50.15 seconds.

Her gold medal is yet another addition to her already glowing list of accolades, which includes the Women’s 400m world title she won earlier this month. Polina Miller (51.49s) of Russia won the silver medal and Ersetic Justyna Swiety (52.19s) of Poland claimed the bronze. Bahraini Iman Essa also competed in the race but finished sixth in 52.88s. In the Women’s 3,000m Steeplechase, Winfred secured first place in nine minutes 19.24 seconds.

Marusa Mismas (9:24.47) of Slovenia was second and Luiza Gega (9:26.35) of Albania third. Abubakar claimed his gold medal in the Men’s 400m in 45.84 seconds. Mazen Alyasen (46.24s) from Saudi Arabia was the runner-up, while Musa won the bronze for Bahrain in 46.70s. Bahrain have now won five medals from the Games, and they are seventh on the overall medal tally.

Aside from yesterday’s four medals, Sukhrob Boqiev won a bronze medal in Judo in the Men’s under-60kg category. China top the table with 94 medals in all, including 54 gold. Russia are second with 76 total medals including 27 gold, while Brazil are third with 41 medals, 10 of which are gold. The Games conclude on Sunday
