Negligence results in amputation of employee’s hand, convicts fined BD2800

The Higher Criminal Court sentenced four employees of an electrical contracting company to be fined BD700 each as they were held accountable of a negligence mistake by exposing an Asian worker to an electric shock that led to his left hand amputated.

As per the court documents, the victim was asked to attend to a control room by the first appellant because of an electrical fault in one of the transformers. When the engine was turned on, the worker was subjected to an electric shock that left his arm amputated. This, as the court stated, was confirmed by reports of both the forensic doctor and the occupational safety engineer as well as the statement of the victim.

In his report, the occupational safety engineer proved that the victim was subjected to an electric shock while performing his work. The work site was not provided with the safety tools, and no precautions were taken to keep the workers at the site from the dangers of electricity.

The court found that the convicts all caused each mistake, which resulted in injury to the worker as a result of their breach of the requirements of their profession by not taking into account and ensure that the maintenance work and implemented in a safe manner, which resulted in injury to the victim.
