Couple wins street art contest in Germany

Manama : Two Bahrain residents have bagged  first places in two major 3D street art competitions in Germany.

Indian couple Limnesh Augustine and Jincy Babu won first place in 3D Masters Category of both Gonnheim International Street Art Festival and Blumberg International Street Art Festival.

The couple competed against artists from all over the world in the two-day street competitions. Their three dimensional paintings, one which was a Ferrari car and another a mermaid, won the awards.

“In Gonnheim we chose to make a three dimensional painting of a mermaid holding a bowl with a fish inside, which made it look more lifelike. We are happy that it was well-received and that we won the award.” Augustine said.

For the second competition held in Blumberg, the couple made a three dimensional painting of a Ferrari car with a monkey as its driver.

“The second competition was much more difficult than the first one because of the harsh weather conditions. When we were halfway through the painting it rained and the painting suffered as a result,“ Augustine said, adding that they had to work on the painting again which was more time consuming.

“This was difficult because it was a time bound event, we only had two days to prepare the entire painting and the rain slowed us down. It affected us more than the other artists because our painting was much bigger and we had a lot of area to cover.”

“The paintings, being three dimensional look interactive. You can take a picture next to it and seem like you are in the painting,” he added.

The couple arrived in Germany right after participating in a competition in USA. “Unfortunately we did not win anything in USA but it was a great experience,” Augustine said. The couple are now considered A-list artists and are invited to all the international art competitions. They are also provided with air tickets, hotel accommodation and incentives to take part in the competitions.

Augustine, who also works in the IT field, said they plan to take part in more competitions in the future. “I will always be involved in art and I will make sure to spread out my annual leave into chunks so that I can participate in all competitions. My wife is a full-time artist and she is always ready for such competitions.”
