Alejandro claims top prize

Manama : Awali Golf Club (AGC) was forced to close the course last week due to heavy flooding, leaving scores of golfers twiddling their thumbs as they were unable to play, but a week on the course dried out in record time allowing the Captain’s Prize competition to go ahead without a hitch.

The annual competition, dating back 60 years, is paid for entirely by the AGC captain who provides the prizes and chooses the format. This year was no different, Bill Scarth, who has sponsored the competition for the last two seasons, decided on an individual Stableford format and offered an impressive array of prizes to the winners.

Winner Rey Alejandro (41 points) was in good form with birdies on the 5th, 6th and 10th holes earning himself a handicap cut to boot. Mohammed A Salmeen came in second, two points behind the leader and in a three way tie for third place saw C V Murthy win on countback from David Bailey and Lynn St Lawrence all on 38 points.

Thanks to the Captain’s generosity, a huge percentage of the 80 competitors left the club with a prize. Not only were the top ten scorers recognised but a further ten prizes were earmarked as side prizes and numerous raffle prizes for a few more lucky recipients.

Assisting Scarth in the prize giving were Nicky Park, and Tournament Director Rashid Al Qutami.
