Bahraini security man's trial put off

ManamaThe High Criminal Court has adjourned the case of a Bahraini security man accused of raising funds for two anti-government channels until October 2 for review.

The defendant is said to have collected BD8,000, out of which he sent BD7,000 to a man named Yassir Al Habib, who is an infamous Shia cleric living in London.

The accused had been in contact with him since 2008. He was offered a post in the administration of the London-based channels. So the man was told to raise funds in Bahrain in favour of the channels. Both the channels had reportedly broadcast programmes attacking the government and the Sunni people as well as Prophet Mohammed’s companions.

Investigations revealed that the defendant succeeded in collecting the BD8,000 in 10 days. The 33-year-old man confessed that he had been raising funds since 2013, and he had given the donors receipts to win their confidence.

According to court files, the money sent to the channels was meant to finance a movie degrading two symbols of Islam, including caliph Omar Al Khattab and Khalid bin Al Waleed.
