Eker blast suspects held

Manama : Police investigations have led to the arrest of who planned and executed the terrorist blast on June 30 in East Eker near Shaikh Jaber Al Subah highway towards Nuwaidrat.

The two arrested were 35-year-old Hassan Jassim Hassan Al Haiki and 26-year-old Hussain Ibrahim Ali Hussain Marzooq.

According to the investigators, both Al Haiki and Marzooq were trained by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. Al Haiki was trained to manufacture and use weapons and explosives, while Marzooq was trained to assemble explosives, plant bombs and to use RPG and Kalashnikovs.

Another wanted suspect 27-year-old Hussain Ahmed Abdullah Ahmed Hussain, who is a fugitive, was also found to have close links with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. He was previously convicted in bomb-making and murder cases.

Investigations also revealed that the military-grade explosive was hidden inside a bag under a billboard. The blast caused the resultant shrapnel to penetrate bodies and metal. Metal balls were found 120 metres away from the blast area.

DT News previously reported that the blast caused the death of a Bahraini woman who was driving towards Sitra.

Shrapnel from the bomb penetrated her head causing the car to crash into an iron barrier in the middle of the road. Three of her children were also injured. Another civilian car and several nearby shops were also damaged in the blast. Legal proceedings are underway to refer the case to the Public Prosecution.
