Planters Removed to Improve Shopper Access

Parking is being restored along Shaikh Hamad Avenue in Muharraq Souq after authorities began removing landscaped concrete planters that had reduced parking spaces and drawn complaints from traders and shoppers.

The Works Ministry has started modifying and expanding parking along the avenue following coordination with the Muharraq Municipal Council and local traders, Council Chairman Abdulaziz Al Naar said.

The redevelopment project, approved in 2022 and carried out under the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, replaced parking bays with landscaped flower beds as part of efforts to beautify the historic market.

While the improvements enhanced the area's appearance, traders said the loss of parking discouraged customers and affected business.

The restoration will provide between 108 and 120 parking spaces near the souq entrance, with an additional 83 spaces planned further along the avenue. A new multi-storey car park is also under construction at the former Muharraq Post Office site to further ease parking shortages.

The move follows repeated calls from shop owners, shoppers and MPs to reinstate parking and improve access to one of Bahrain's busiest traditional markets.
