25 licences issued for publications since 1975

As many as 25 licences were granted to establishments to practice all sorts of journalism in the Kingdom since 1975, Parliament and Information Affairs Minister Isa bin Abdulrahman Al Hammadi has revealed.

According to the Minister, seven companies were given permits to issue daily publications, while three others were permitted to issue non-daily journals and 15 companies for issuing private publications.

This came in reply to a parliamentary query submitted recently by MP Jamal Dawood about the number of permits issued by the Ministry to companies in the field of journalism in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The MP’s questions also included if those companies were owned by Bahrainis.

Al Hammadi confirmed that all companies were owned by Bahraini citizens in accordance with the Kingdom’s Journalism, Publications and Distribution Law, which also stipulates that all responsible editors should be Bahrainis.

The Minister’s answers showed that the first publication permitted was in 1975 and the most recent was in 2013.

This will be reviewed and discussed before the MPs during their next weekly meet on Tuesday.
