Thailand Tightens Tourist Entry Rules, Ending 60-Day Visa-Free Stays for 90+ Countries

Bangkok: Thailand has made major modifications to its tourist entry policy, phasing out the 60-day, visa-free stay policy for travellers from over 90 countries and territories, including India, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and the Philippines.

Under the new regulations, most eligible tourists would be able to stay in the country without a visa for up to 30 days, a substantial decrease from the previous 60-day limit imposed in 2024 to stimulate tourism. Thai authorities stated that the action aims to reduce the misuse of visa exemptions, unlawful work, and unauthorised stays amid strengthening immigration regulations.

The updated restrictions also include changes to the Thai Visa on Arrival system, which will shift some countries to different entry categories. The new framework is expected to affect Indian travellers, who have had visa-free access since July 2024, and may require them to use the Visa on Arrival scheme for future visits.

Officials emphasised that the policy change aims to address security and compliance concerns, rather than discourage tourism. The government stated that it remains committed to welcoming foreign visitors while ensuring that immigration regulations are not misused.

Tourism is a key component of Thailand's economy, and officials said they will continue to assess the impact of the new rules on visitor arrivals. The government plans to publish more details about implementation dates and country-specific criteria in the coming weeks.
