Special Investigation Unit Completes Probe into Detainee Death, Refers Suspect to Criminal Court
The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has announced the completion of its investigations into the death of a detainee, confirming the referral of a suspect in custody to the High Criminal Court on charges of assault resulting in death.
According to the unit, the case came to attention on 27 March 2026 after reports circulated on social media regarding the detainee’s death, alongside an official notification from the Inspector General of the National Intelligence Service. The notification stated that the deceased had been held by the agency and was allegedly assaulted by one of its personnel, resulting in serious injuries. The detainee was later transferred to the hospital, where he died due to the severity of his injuries.
Following the report, the SIU immediately initiated a comprehensive investigation under its legal mandate. The process included appointing a forensic medical expert to determine the cause and nature of the injuries, as well as reviewing all procedures related to the detainee’s arrest, which was carried out under a lawful warrant alongside other individuals.
As part of the investigation, authorities collected medical reports, official documents, and relevant video footage, while also conducting a site inspection. Judicial police investigations were intensified, and statements were taken from the deceased’s father and witnesses connected to the incident. The accused was interrogated and admitted to the act attributed to him.
Based on the evidence gathered, the SIU concluded that sufficient grounds exist to proceed with criminal charges and ordered the referral of the accused, in custody, to the High Criminal Court.
The Special Investigation Unit reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law, ensuring accountability, and protecting human rights, particularly those of detainees and prisoners. It stressed that it will continue to take firm action against any violations of rights guaranteed under the constitution and law, in pursuit of justice.
