Mosquito Traps Approved for Public Spaces

Evenings were not always this way. For many families today, stepping outside comes with a quiet calculation. Stay a little longer, or head back inside. This week, the Southern Municipal Council took a step to change that by approving the use of electric mosquito traps in open public areas.

The approval, passed by majority following a recommendation from the Services and Public Utilities Committee, supports deploying mobile and fixed traps across residential and recreational spaces.

It is a focused decision, but one rooted in a reality residents experience often, especially after rainfall.

Mosquitoes do not arrive as a headline issue, yet they reshape how people use their surroundings. A short walk becomes shorter. A child is called back inside. Conversations outdoors are cut before they begin.

These are small moments, repeated across neighbourhoods, quietly shaping daily life.

The approved traps rely on light-based systems that attract and eliminate insects, offering continuous coverage in areas where people gather. Their presence is expected to support more comfortable public spaces, particularly during peak mosquito activity.

What changes is not only the environment, but the way people move through it.

Behind the approval is something simple. The expectation that a public space should feel usable at any hour. That an evening outside should not be something to think twice about.

With this step, the Southern Municipal Council has brought attention to a detail often overlooked, yet widely felt, reinforcing that quality of life is shaped not only by major projects, but by the comfort of everyday moments.
