The Board of Commissioners of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) held its third regular meeting, chaired by Engineer Ali Ahmed Al-Darazi, with participation from the board members and the Secretary-General.
The meeting opened with a strong condemnation of the recent aggressive attacks by Iran targeting the Kingdom of Bahrain. The board emphasized that these hostile actions represent a blatant violation of international law and disrespect for national sovereignty, in addition to a direct breach of human rights principles due to the threats posed to civilians and civil infrastructure. The board also stressed the importance of activating international accountability mechanisms to ensure justice and prevent impunity.
The Commissioners expressed full solidarity with those injured in the attacks, wishing them a speedy recovery. They reaffirmed their support for all national efforts aimed at strengthening the Kingdom’s security and stability and reiterated their endorsement of all government measures taken to safeguard citizens, residents, and public order.
The meeting also reviewed a number of agenda items and discussed updates on the institution’s work and programs in promoting and protecting human rights. This included outcomes from a coordination meeting between the NIHR President and the Minister of Social Development, aimed at enhancing cooperation with civil society organizations and activating joint task forces on human rights, women’s and children’s rights, health rights, and digital rights.
Additionally, the board reviewed reports from permanent specialized committees and the Child Rights Commissioner. The Committee on Visits to Detention Facilities conducted six visits to correctional and pretrial detention centers, as well as inspections of healthcare institutions and the Labour Market Regulatory Authority, to monitor human rights conditions and assess service quality. The Committee on Rights and Public Liberties issued 12 advisory opinions on draft laws, including the Draft Law on Promoting Coexistence and Tolerance and Combating Hate Speech, alongside amendments to several related laws.
