Bahraini Fishermen Report Armed Hijacking by Iranian Nationals
Three Bahraini sailors have recounted a harrowing experience after their vessel was subjected to armed robbery on 18 February 2026. According to their statements to the Ministry of Interior, the fishermen were forced at gunpoint from Bahrain’s territorial waters into Iranian waters. During the incident, one of the vessel’s engines and other belongings were seized.
The sailors said they were made to board a boat operated by the attackers, who then directed them toward Iranian waters. They confirmed that the perpetrators were Iranian nationals. After approximately three hours, the fishermen were released and allowed to return to Bahraini waters.
Coast Guard reports indicate that similar incidents have occurred multiple times, involving Iranian individuals. The Ministry of Interior stressed that such acts violate international maritime law and affirmed Bahrain’s right to take all necessary legal measures to protect its citizens and maritime boundaries.
