Manama: The Government Hospitals Administration has announced that its medical laboratories have successfully secured international accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP), a globally recognised authority in laboratory quality and performance. The milestone highlights Bahrain’s continued efforts to align public healthcare services with the highest international benchmarks.

The accreditation signifies full compliance with strict CAP standards, ensuring precise diagnostic testing, enhanced patient safety, and robust quality control measures. It also reflects the application of comprehensive procedures covering every stage of laboratory work, from specimen handling to final reporting, supported by continuous quality improvement and staff training.

Dr. Maryam Athbi Al Jalahma, Chief Executive Officer of Government Hospitals, said the achievement represents a key step in strengthening diagnostic capabilities and advancing the national healthcare system. She praised the commitment and professionalism of Bahraini medical and administrative teams whose efforts made the accreditation possible.

Meanwhile, Dr. Nermin Kamal Hassan, Head of the Pathology Department and Laboratories Unit, noted that CAP accreditation reinforces laboratories’ preparedness for ongoing evaluations, boosts operational performance, and supports the development of national expertise in line with the Kingdom’s healthcare goals.

CAP accreditation is regarded worldwide as a gold standard for laboratory excellence, awarded only to institutions that demonstrate rigorous governance, accuracy, and quality assurance, thereby enhancing public trust in diagnostic services.

The announcement also highlighted the capabilities of the new Central Laboratory at Salmaniya Medical Complex, which is equipped with advanced technologies and integrated systems. The facility can process more than 12,000 samples per hour, has expanded storage capacity exceeding 46,000 samples, and utilises a modern electronic system that speeds up sample intake and analysis, benefiting patients and healthcare providers across Bahrain.
