Manama: The First High Criminal Court has sentenced a 27-year-old Asian woman to 15 years in prison, fined her BD10,000, and ordered her deportation after completion of her sentence, in addition to confiscating the seized drugs.
The Public Prosecution charged the defendant with importing and possessing marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, in violation of Bahrain’s anti-narcotics laws, during 2025.
According to case details, customs officers at Bahrain International Airport became suspicious of a large backpack arriving from an Asian country in the early hours of October 4, 2025. X-ray screening revealed unusual density within the bag, prompting officers to refer it to the red channel for inspection.
Upon searching the luggage in the presence of the defendant, customs officers discovered eight medium-sized wrapped packages concealed among clothes. The packages contained compressed herbal material suspected to be marijuana. Subsequent examination confirmed the substance weighed approximately 2.29 kilograms.
The Anti-Narcotics Directorate stated that investigations revealed the defendant had smuggled the drugs into Bahrain with the intent to traffic and distribute them for financial gain. During questioning by the Public Prosecution, the accused confessed that she knowingly transported the narcotics, explaining that she had obtained them through an agreement with an individual in an Asian country in exchange for BD220, with her travel and accommodation expenses covered.
Laboratory analysis by the Toxicology and Drug Laboratory of the Forensic Evidence Department confirmed that the seized substance was marijuana.
Based on the evidence and the defendant’s confession, the court convicted her on all charges and imposed the maximum penalties, including imprisonment, a fine, deportation, and confiscation of the drugs.
