Bahrain has reached a new milestone in veterinary medicine with the country’s first-ever cataract surgery for a pet. The successful procedure highlights a significant advancement in the quality of medical care now available for animals in the Kingdom. The groundbreaking case involved a 12-year-old Shih Tzu whose owners noticed he was increasingly bumping into objects and struggling with everyday navigation.
Condition
Specialist ophthalmic examinations confirmed that the dog was suffering from cataracts, a condition that clouds the lens and severely impairs vision. Following the diagnosis, Charis Vets’ in-house ophthalmic surgeon and medical team developed a precise, case-specific treatment plan to restore the dog’s sight. This coordinated approach demonstrates the growing sophistication of veterinary care now accessible within Bahrain. The surgery was performed by Chief Surgeon, Dr Sooryadas Surendran, and assisted by inhouse vet Ophthalmologist Dr Melvin Varghese, and clinical Director Dr Hansel Geo Thomas.
Anniversary
In line with its tenth-year anniversary and commitment to social responsibility, Charis Vets is also offering one free advanced ophthalmic surgery for a cat or dog to support families who may otherwise be unable to access such specialist care. Charis Vets, known for its comprehensive specialist services, including ophthalmology, neurology, gynecology, laparoscopy, orthopedics, and cardiology performed the procedure successfully. This milestone not only marks a new era in pet healthcare in Bahrain but also reflects the increasing availability of advanced treatment options for animals across the Kingdom.
