An urgent proposal to monitor instalment sellers and act against those inflating debts for low-value electronics won Parliament’s backing yesterday, amid warnings that thousands of citizens and residents are already tied up in court cases.

MPs Ali Al Dosari, Mohammed Al Olaiwi, AbdulHakim Al Sheno, Mohammed Al Rafai and Mohammed Al Baloushi secured approval for the wish proposal, which calls for closer checks on shops selling on instalment plans and rapid legal steps against outlets that breach the law, particularly in the electronics trade.

The move follows complaints that some traders are steering customers into contracts that leave them paying tens of thousands of dinars for mobile phones, tablets and laptops worth less than BD1,000, relying on cheques, debt notes and other binding documents that later end up before the courts. MP Ali Al Dosari said instalment sales, when run properly, help households cope with higher living costs.
